Residency in Costa Rica

   


Pensionado

  • Requires proof of US $1,000 per month income from a permanent pension source or retirement fund.
  • Must remain in the country at least 4 months per year.
  • Can claim a spouse and dependents less than 18 years of age.
  • Can own a company and receive income.
  • Cannot work as an employee.

Rentista

  • Requires proof of US $2,500 per month income for at least five years guaranteed by a banking institution or a US$60,000 deposit in an approved Costa Rican bank.
  • Must remain in country at least 4 months per year.
  • Can claim a spouse and dependents less that 18 years of age.
  • Can own a company and receive income.
  • Cannot work as an employee.

Investor

  • Investment of US$50,000 in approved sectors such as tourism or export, $100,000 in reforestation, of $200,000 in any other business.
  • Must remain in country at least 6 months per year.
  • Cannot claim a spouse or any dependents.
  • Income allowed from the project.
  • Can own a company and receive income.
  • Cannot work as an employee.

Representante

  • Applicant must be director of a company meeting certain requirements such as employing a minimum number of local workers as established by the labor law. Financial statements must be certified by a Costa Rican Public Accountant.
  • Must remain in country at least 6 months per year.
  • Cannot claim a spouse or any dependents.
  • Can earn an income from the company.
  • Can own a company and receive income.

Permanent Residency in Costa Rica

  • First degree relative status with a Costa Rican Citizen through marriage to a citizen or having a Costa Rican child.
  • Must visit Costa Rica at least once per year.
  • Cannot claim a spouse or any dependents.
  • Can own a company and receive income.
  • Can work.

Note: There is a new requirement that a resident also must be registered with the embassy of his/her home country and must join the CAJA (Social Services Medical Plan), which is approximately US $40.00 monthly per individual.
